Community Spoon

Chef David Guas is known for his community efforts. At the onset of the pandemic - Guas went rogue the day following the public school shutdown, launching the FIRST rapid relief response to feed local students and families nutritious, plant-based meals in Arlington County at a time when no meals were available to people reliant on the public school lunch program. As the co-founder of Chefs Feeding Families, formed with Real Food for Kids, the organization provided over 180,000 meals.

Guas - a food insecurity activist - once again applied the same community-driven spirit in 2021 to get involved, immediately and independently. Guas launched the "Community Spoon” campaign, providing meals and groceries to Afghan refugees in Northern Virginia. Guas and his dedicated team provided prepared vegetarian meals to the Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, which were dispersed to the refugee families in need. Coming with nothing but themselves, a freshly home-cooked meal is the most welcoming gesture to offer those who have suffered such a traumatic loss so that they may know that they are safe in their new found home, here, in the United States.
